An early warning system is not a single sensor or a single alert — it is a chain of four steps that has to hold together end to end: detect an anomaly, fuse it with corroborating evidence into a verified event, forecast how that event will evolve, and act by getting a clear, standards-compliant alert to the people who can respond. A system that is fast at detection but weak at fusion produces false alarms. A system that fuses well but cannot forecast leaves responders reacting instead of positioning ahead of the event. OrbiVigil is built around all four steps as one connected pipeline, applied consistently across hazard types.

Why early warning depends on fused, uncertainty-aware data

Single-sensor systems are brittle. A thermal sensor alone cannot distinguish a wildfire from a steel plant; a single radar pass cannot distinguish genuine flood extent from an SAR shadow; a single seismic feed cannot separate a nuisance tremor from a damaging event. Reliable early warning requires cross-checking independent sources against each other, and it requires being explicit about uncertainty rather than presenting a single confident-looking number. A forecast that hides its own uncertainty is more dangerous than no forecast at all, because it invites overconfidence in exactly the situations where caution is most needed.

From detection to actionable alert

A verified event is only useful once it reaches the people responsible for acting on it, in a format their systems can consume automatically. The Common Alerting Protocol (CAP 1.2) is the international standard for exactly this handoff, and OrbiVigil is designed to integrate with the emergency-management platforms that authorities already run, delivering CAP-formatted messages rather than requiring agencies to adopt a new interface. Every tactical output OrbiVigil produces is decision support: a human — an incident commander, an air-operations officer, a duty analyst — reviews and approves before anything becomes an order, and public evacuation alerts are issued only by the authorized civil-protection authority, never broadcast by the platform directly.

Multi-hazard roadmap

OrbiVigil Fire is the first product built on this pipeline, in active development with France and the European Union as the first coverage region, fusing thermal satellite detection with weather and terrain data to forecast spread. The same architecture is designed from the outset to extend to other hazards: OrbiVigil Flood, combining SAR-based flood mapping with hydrological forecasts; OrbiVigil Storm, built on ensemble weather models and lightning imaging; OrbiVigil Landslide, using ground-deformation monitoring and rainfall thresholds; OrbiVigil Seismic, focused on earthquake impact mapping and ground-deformation monitoring rather than prediction; and OrbiVigil Impact, delivering Copernicus EMS-grade damage assessment after any hazard event. Each product shares the same detect-fuse-forecast-act pipeline; only the sensors and models change.
